Off road skateboards and longboards are one of the most fun and exhilarating ways of experiencing rural parts of the world. Not only this, their design means that all terrain skateboards are just that, they work great on all terrains. You’ll get just as much enjoyment out of using one of these skateboard on tarmac as you would on a dirt trail. So with this in mind some bright spark decided to attach an electric motor to an all terrain board and what’s left is one of the most fun forms of transportation in existence – the off road electric skateboard.
Unfortunately electric all terrain skateboards haven’t quite taken off as quickly as, say, hoverboards. For this reason there isn’t a huge range on the market. Some brands have come and gone quite quickly and many are backed by only very small, and even part time businesses. But with all that said there are still a few very good electric off road skateboards that you can buy right now. We’ve gathered a list of 5 of the best that should cover all the bases so you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for.

1. AirWheel M3 Electric Longboard
The first skateboard on our list is the M3 by AirWheel. It’s an electric longboard that features large, all terrain rubber tires and built in damper masses which combine together to give a durable, stable and strong ride that can withstand basically any terrain. This makes the M3 incredible versatile and it’s just as comfortable being ridden on the beach as it is in the city.
The M3 also performs very well, it’s top speed is around 13 mph, which isn’t the fastest we’ve ever seen but still a good top speed. The battery is a Sony Lithium ion battery that has a capacity of 162Wh. This is good for around 13 miles on a single charge. The battery is also able to be fully recharged in only 2 hours.
The board weighs about 25 lbs (11.5 kg) which is much lighter than a lot of the boards on this list. This means that, whilst certainly not idea, you could even get away with using this as a commuting skateboard if you really wanted. The light weight and the high performance also help this board comfortably manage inclines of around 15 degrees.
The skateboard is bidirectional which means it can head either forward or backward by simply switching the direction button on the remote. The controls are also very simple and it takes no time getting used to the controls. Simply slide the remote forward to go forward and accelerate, hold the remote to keep a constant speed, and slide backward to decelerate and brake. The electric skateboard will respond to the riders’ shift of body weight, similar to the regular one, to turn left or right.
Overall, the Airwheel M3 is one of the most versatile electric skateboards we’ve reviewed. It performs very well on and off the road and can tackle all terrains well. It isn’t water proof, which is a little disappointing considering it’s likely that you’ll encounter the odd puddle or two if you’re riding on some trials, but that’s not the end of the world. For around $500 you’re getting a very capable, versatile and fun little skateboard.

2. Atom Longboards Electric B10X All Terrain Electric Longboard
Atom Longboards are the brand behind many longboard models that are well known and well respected. They’ve also attempted making some electric longboards and have successfully made it onto our list of the best electric skateboards under $1000 with their Atom Electric H16D model. The B10X is their attempt at an all terrain electric longboard, and it’s a very good attempt at that.
The B10X’s standout feature is it’s set of all terrain tires. They’re big and beefy with a nice thick tread that work great at keeping you steady when you’re speeding about over a variety of different surfaces. The B10X is powered by a 1000W belt driven DC motor that helps the board reach speeds of about 15 mph. It uses high performance Samsung 25R lithium-Ion batteries to reach a max range of 7 miles. This isn’t as good as many of the other board we’ve reviewed but is a decent amount. The max range is helped out by the regenerative braking system that Atom have implemented that helps to top up the batteries when the riders brakes.
The board weighs only 14 lbs but can hold a rider with a maximum weight of 275 lbs. It has a very smooth acceleration and deceleration process and the controls are very intuitive. It can also comfortably scale hills of 12 degrees on both tarmac and, of course, dirt tracks.
Overall, the Atom B10X is a great board. It performs well, with a nice smooth acceleration good top speed and an insatiable hill climbing appetite. The wheels are great, despite being slightly on the small side. They’ll manage a range of different surfaces and will easily go over gravel, sticks, large cracks and more. Don’t expect them to handle long grass too well as this isn’t a mountainboard, but anything else will be no problem. The B10X also comes at a very reasonable price.

3. Ninestep Electric Mountainboard
The Ninestep Electric skateboard has also featured on our list of the best electric skateboards under $1000 and is definitely much more of a mountainboard. As you can see it has big chunky wheels, with pneumatic tires that are perfect for off road riding. It also has two foot straps to ensure that you remain in complete control whenever you’re facing a bumpy road or trail. Unlike the previously mentioned Atom, this board will easily ride through longer grass and just about any other surface you can think of.
The Ninestep makes use of two custom high performance brushless motors that give it a top speed of 25 mph. These also produce a good acceleration that makes you happy they included the foot straps! The motors also help it achieve a climbing grade of 30 degrees. The battery is an LG 11Ah battery that gives you a maximum range of 20 – 25 km. The battery can be fully charged in less than 3 hours so you don’t even have to wait that long between rides to get going again.
Like many of the boards on this list, the Ninestep has multiple riding modes that give you more or less power and energy saving modes, it can also go in forward and reverse directions, all the a quick flick of a control.
Don’t think the Ninestep is only suited to off road riding. It’s also a great option for riding on tarmac and can even make a great commuting skateboard, despite it being a bit big and heavy – it weights almost 29 lbs (13 kg). It’s ride is soft and comfortable and if the roads you’re riding to work are a little bumpy it can make a great option to improve the ride into work.
Overall, the Ninestep is a step above the other two boards we’ve mentioned so far. It can handle more terrain and is the first board that we class as truly “all terrain”. It’s performance is much better, hitting an almost scary top speed of 25 mph. The maximum range is also very good, as is its hill climbing ability. All this performance does come at a price though, expect to pay closer to $1000 dollars for the Ninestep.

4. Mototec MT SKT 1600
The Mototec is another off road electric skateboard that made it onto our list of the best electric skateboards under $1000. This has a lot of versatility, maybe the most of all the boards on the list and is incredibly well made. It looks like a classic skateboard except with the addition of a big battery pack and some massive off road tires. These tires give it the ability to be ridden fairly comfortably on basically any terrain and surface. It’ll manage grass, dirt, sand, gravel, soil and many more. This means you can ride it from the mountains, onto the road and straight onto the beach without any trouble.
The Mototec is also extremely powerful with a set of two 800W motors giving it a total power output of 1600W. This means it can reach a top speed of 22 mph. It uses a 36V 14Ah battery that’s attached underneath the deck. This isn’t the sleekest design and it can sometimes become a bit of a hindrance if you’re going fast over lots of big bumps. But it does provide the skateboard with a maximum range of around 10 miles.
This beefy board is built incredibly well. It has a 12 layer maple deck that is very strong and durable, it feels quite stiff, which we like, and think that this is the ideal type of deck when you’ve got a massive battery pack underneath it. This and the big 10 inch air filled tires give it the ability to carry riders up to 260 lbs.
The Mototec is controlled using a wireless, handheld remote control with variable throttle. This means you are always in control of how fast or slow you want to go and when you want to stop. It also is equipped with an integrated anti lock braking system so you can stop safely.
Overall, this is without a doubt one of the best off road electric skateboards on the market today. It has great performance, can handle any terrain with ease and will even double up as a great commuter skateboard. We would like to have seen a lower weight, it weighs a whopping 71 lbs (32 kg), but this is understandable for what you’re getting. It’s also very well priced and will cost you about 30% less than the Ninestep.

5. eGlide AT Electric Skateboard
Our final all terrain electric skateboard is the eGlide At (All Terrain) Electric Skateboard. This is a big, bold and beefy electric skateboard that is actually made from a laser cut aluminum. It’s also got huge pneumatic tires that will conquer any surface or terrain that you throw at it. The entire thing is built like a tank, it’s tough, solid and very very sturdy. We can imagine you could have some pretty spectacular crashes with this and the board would just continue on and on.
The performance is also just as good as the build quality. It is powered by an 800w motor that can take you up to the top speed of 24 mph in less than 5 seconds! It can reach a maximum range of around 15 miles on a single charge which is very good and all the electronics are covered by a 1 year warranty.
It also a few little extra features that we really like. The controller is attached to the board. At first we thought this would be a big negative but in time we’ve grown to really like it. Firstly, it offers you an extra level of safety and peace of mind as it features a kill switch. If you get separated from the board just hold onto the controller and the cord will detach itself from the board stopping any movement. This is very similar to how a treadmill safety switch works. The corded controller also helps you not lose the controller. We also thought that the cord would get in the way, but seeing as this board is definitely not built with tricks or any real movement of your body in mind, it never got in our way at all.
Overall, the eGlide All Terrain Electric Skateboard is one of the best off road electric skateboards on the market today. It’s very well made, performs well and is a lot of fun. It does cost quite a lot however.

Safety Gear
The correct safety gear is necessary for normal skateboard, but when you’re adding in the possibility of loose surfaces, big drops and hitting trees at 25 mph then the safety gear is all the more important. We highly recommend that you read through the next section and pick up a few items if you don’t already have them.
We also strongly urge you to not overstep your skill level. If you’re newer to skateboards, especially off road skateboarding or mountainboarding, then we’d recommend taking it slow and building up your ability and confidence over time.
Safety gear is there to protect those vital points when the inevitable happens, here’s a few things we recommend:
Helmets
It’s important to wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head from slamming against the ground or walls. This is the most important piece of safety equipment and we highly recommend you use one.
